Home Economics is a popular subject choice in C.C.C, for both boys and girls. It is a subject which empowers its learners with life skills.
Junior Cycle Home Economics Course Outline
The Junior Cycle Home Economics programme is built around 3 main areas:
- Food and Culinary Skills
- Responsible Family Living and
- Textiles and crafts
The above areas are woven together by common threads of individual & family empowerment, heath & wellbeing, sustainable living and consumer studies.
This means your son/daughter will learn about healthy eating, kitchen hygiene & safety, menu planning, consumer studies, home management, budgeting, caring for clothes, textile and craft skills, cooking skills, healthy living, the working.
Classes in Home Economics are interactive, fun and engaging. A range of resources and teaching methodologies are used to make the material accessible to all level of learners.
Assessment in Home Economics:
Assessment in Home Economics reflects the format of its teaching in that it is a combination of practical and theory based assessments. Informal on-going assessment is used from year with each unit of learning assessed in some manner.
The formal assessment requirements are as follows:

Classroom Based Assessment 1: Creative Textiles
Make a textile item for an individual or the home
or
Recycle or upcycle a textile item for an individual or the home

Result will appear on Junior Cycle Portfolio of Achievement

3rd Year

Classroom Based Assessment 2: Food Literacy Brief
Use the design brief process to research, generate ideas and possible solutions for a Food Literacy Skills Brief, drawn from a list of briefs issued by the State Examinations Commission (SEC)

Result will appear on Junior Cycle Portfolio of Achievement
